Research led by Eugénio Calei identifies dacite in Serra do Moco
Huambo — A research team led by researcher Eugénio Calei has identified the presence of dacite, a volcanic rock, in the Serra do Moco region, Huambo province, as part of the scientific work being carried out for the establishment of the Huambo Plateau Geopark.
The identification is the result of survey, identification and characterisation activities of geodiversity sites in the province, aimed at recognising areas with scientific, educational, cultural, tourist and sustainable-use potential.
Dacite is an igneous volcanic rock of intermediate composition between andesite and rhyolite. It typically has a high silica content and is composed mainly of plagioclase and quartz, and may also contain minerals such as biotite, hornblende and pyroxene. Its colouring can range from light to dark grey tones.
According to data presented by the team, the samples collected in Serra do Moco were submitted for laboratory analysis at the Geological Institute of Angola, contributing to the characterisation and classification of the rock found.
Scientific and heritage significance
The identification of dacite adds relevant information to the understanding of the geology and landscape evolution of the Huambo Plateau. Studying the composition and distribution of this rock may help researchers better understand the geological processes that contributed to the formation and transformation of the region.
For the Huambo Plateau Geopark project, the discovery could represent a further element enhancing local geodiversity. Geological sites with particular characteristics can be used for scientific research, environmental education, geotourism activities and the promotion of natural heritage.
In addition, dacite has properties that allow for various uses under certain conditions. The rock can be used as crushed stone, filling material and aggregate in some construction works, although its suitability depends on the specific properties of the deposit.
Economic and tourism potential
The presence of a volcanic rock such as dacite could also help create new points of geological interest in Serra do Moco. If properly studied, protected and integrated into a geotourism project, the outcrops could serve as spaces for scientific education and visitor attraction.
However, any eventual economic exploitation must be preceded by technical studies to determine the quality, extent, quantity and characteristics of the occurrence, so as to prevent exploitation from compromising the site's scientific and scenic value.
Are there any drawbacks?
Despite its significance, the presence of dacite also calls for a responsible approach. One of the main concerns relates to indiscriminate extraction of the rock. Extraction for construction or other purposes, if carried out without planning, could alter the landscape, degrade geological outcrops and result in the loss of elements important for research and education.
Another limitation relates to its use as concrete aggregate. Due to its high silica content, certain dacites may exhibit undesirable reactions with cement components, meaning their use in concrete should be assessed through specific testing.
It should also be made clear that the identification of dacite in Serra do Moco does not, in itself, mean there is currently an active volcano or a risk of eruption in the region. Dacite is a rock formed by ancient volcanic processes or associated with specific geological environments, and its presence should be interpreted in light of the site's geological history.
A new element for the Geopark
The identification of this rock therefore represents a further data point for Huambo's geodiversity inventory and could help deepen understanding of the region's geological history.
The work led by Eugénio Calei forms part of the efforts to establish the Huambo Plateau Geopark, an initiative seeking to turn the province's geological and natural heritage into a tool for research, education, conservation and sustainable development.
Continued study could allow for a more precise determination of the extent of the dacite occurrence in Serra do Moco, its mineralogical composition, geological age and relationship with other rock formations present in the Huambo Plateau.
